Aged care workers in Australia often compare agencies and independent contractor platforms as if they are minor variations of the same thing. Structurally, they are quite different, and the difference affects your pay, your workload and your day-to-day experience.
How a traditional agency works
An agency employs or engages you, places you into shifts or clients, sets or strongly influences your pay rate, and takes a margin between what the client is charged and what you are paid. You generally do not see the client-facing rate. Your relationship is with the agency, not directly with the client.
How an independent contractor platform works
On a platform like Mable, you operate as a sole trader with your own ABN. You set your own hourly rate, negotiate directly with each client, and the platform connects you but does not set your price. You are responsible for client acquisition (within the platform), scheduling, and managing your own bookings and relationships.
How a flat-fee platform works
Nest & Nurture Elder Care is structured differently again. The platform sets a fixed, transparent rate for each role -- Support Workers at $55 per hour, Enrolled Nurses at $80, Registered Nurses at $120 -- and a flat $20 per hour platform fee on top, paid by the family. You see both numbers before accepting any booking. The platform handles client acquisition and matching, the same as an agency, but the pay structure is fixed and visible, the same transparency you would get setting your own rate on an independent platform.
What actually changes for you day to day
- Agency: you are placed into work, paid an agency-set rate, full visibility of the client charge is not typical.
- Independent platform: you set your own rate and negotiate it, you manage your own client relationships and bookings.
- Flat-fee platform: fixed transparent rate set by role, client acquisition and bookings handled for you, no negotiation required.
Which structure suits which worker
If you want to set your own price and are comfortable managing client relationships yourself, an independent platform gives you that control. If you want predictable shift work and do not want to negotiate, a traditional agency removes that decision from you, at the cost of agency-level pay. If you want a fixed, transparent, higher rate without managing your own client acquisition, a flat-fee platform is built specifically for that middle ground.
