In-home childcare in Melbourne sits outside the regulated centre environment, but that does not mean the qualification bar is lower. Families hiring a carer through Nest and Nurture Little Ones are bringing a professional into their home to care for their children unsupervised. The compliance requirements reflect that.
Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
The minimum qualification to work as a carer on the Nest and Nurture Little Ones platform is a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. This is the same entry-level qualification required for centre-based work under the National Quality Framework. It covers child development, safe environments, play-based learning, and age-appropriate care across infant through school-age groups.
Working With Children Check
A Working With Children Check is legally required in Victoria for anyone doing paid child-related work that involves direct contact with children. This applies to nannies, babysitters, and in-home carers. Working without a valid check is a criminal offence under the Working with Children Act 2005 (Vic), carrying penalties of up to two years imprisonment or fines exceeding 43,000 dollars. The check is issued by the Victorian Department of Justice, is valid for five years, and involves a criminal history review and an assessment of any reportable conduct.
HLTAID012 First Aid — Child Specific
General first aid certification is not sufficient. Carers on the Nest and Nurture Little Ones platform are required to hold HLTAID012, which is the childcare-specific first aid unit covering infant and child CPR, anaphylaxis management, asthma response and emergency care for young children. This is a separate unit from the standard HLTAID011 and must be current.
National Police Check
A national police check is required in addition to the WWCC. The WWCC is a targeted screening focused on child safety. A police check is a broader record of any criminal history. Both are required before a carer profile goes live on the platform.
Pertussis vaccination
Whooping cough, or pertussis, is highly contagious and dangerous for infants. Carers are required to hold a current pertussis booster, as adults who are not vaccinated are a primary transmission risk for unvaccinated newborns. This is especially relevant for overnight newborn care.
Two years of verified childcare experience
Qualifications alone are not sufficient. A minimum of two years of hands-on childcare experience is required, with references that can be verified. This means experience in a centre, family day care, nannying or another direct care role, not unrelated work. The experience is checked, not self-reported.
