Is My Overseas Childcare Qualification Recognised in Australia?

Trained overseas and wondering if your qualification counts here? Here is exactly how the recognition process works in Australia.

Australia has a large early childhood workforce shortage, and a significant number of qualified educators who trained overseas are sitting on the sidelines simply because they do not know how to get their qualification recognised. The process is straightforward once you understand it.

Who assesses overseas qualifications

The Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority, known as ACECQA, is the body responsible for assessing overseas early childhood qualifications against the Australian equivalent. ACECQA does not issue the qualification itself. It determines whether your existing qualification is equivalent to an approved Australian qualification under the National Quality Framework.

How the assessment process works

  1. Create an account on the ACECQA qualifications portal
  2. Submit certified copies of your qualification, transcript and any supporting evidence of practical placement hours
  3. Pay the assessment fee
  4. ACECQA reviews the content, depth and practical component of your training against the Australian Cert III, Diploma or Bachelor equivalent
  5. You receive a written outcome: full equivalence, equivalence with conditions (such as additional units required), or not equivalent
ACECQA is not assessing whether you are a good educator. It is assessing whether the content of your training matches what an Australian qualification covers.

How long it takes

Processing times vary, but most straightforward assessments are completed within 8 to 12 weeks of a complete application being submitted. Incomplete applications, missing transcripts or qualifications that require translation can extend this considerably. Submitting a complete, certified, translated application the first time is the single biggest factor in a fast outcome.

What happens if you are assessed as equivalent with conditions

Many overseas-trained educators are assessed as equivalent once they complete a small number of additional units, often covering the Early Years Learning Framework, the National Quality Standard, or Australian child protection legislation specifically. These are usually short, single units through a registered training organisation rather than a full requalification.

What you need before you start the assessment

  • Certified copies of your original qualification certificate
  • An official transcript listing units or subjects studied
  • Evidence of practical placement hours, if your qualification included them
  • Certified English translations of any documents not in English
  • Proof of identity matching the name on your qualification

Can you start working while your assessment is pending?

You cannot be counted in regulated qualification ratios at a centre until your assessment is finalised. In-home care arrangements still require the same underlying qualification standard, so the same assessment outcome applies before you can be verified on a platform like Nest and Nurture Little Ones. Your Working With Children Check, police check and first aid certification can all be obtained in parallel while your qualification assessment is in progress, so the wait is not wasted time.

The honest summary

  • Assessing body: ACECQA, not a government department or individual employer
  • Typical timeframe: 8 to 12 weeks for a complete application
  • Possible outcomes: full equivalence, equivalence with conditions, or not equivalent
  • What to prepare in parallel: WWCC, police check, first aid, references
