Can I Work In-Home Childcare Part-Time Alongside My Centre Job?

Yes. Many carers on Nest and Nurture Little Ones work in-home sessions around an existing centre role. Here is how to make it work.

You do not have to leave centre work to try in-home childcare. A significant number of carers on the Nest and Nurture Little Ones platform hold a part-time or casual centre role and pick up in-home sessions around it.

How your availability works

When you set up your carer profile, you choose the specific days, hours and suburbs you are available. If you work Monday to Wednesday at a centre, you simply mark yourself available for in-home bookings on Thursday, Friday and weekends. You are never offered a booking outside those hours.

Check your centre employment contract

Most centre employment contracts do not restrict casual or part-time educators from other paid work, but some contracts include exclusivity or conflict-of-interest clauses. It is worth checking your contract, particularly if your centre employer operates its own in-home or nanny referral service.

Tax and ABN considerations

Centre employment is usually PAYG, with tax withheld by your employer. In-home carer work through Nest and Nurture Little Ones is independent contractor work under an ABN, meaning you set aside your own tax and are responsible for reporting that income separately at tax time.

Why carers combine both

Combining a centre shift or two with in-home sessions lets you keep the stability and colleagues of centre work while topping up income at a considerably higher hourly rate on your days off. Some carers use in-home work to test whether they want to move to in-home care full-time before making the switch.
